Mark Carney is now Europe seeking closer Canada-EU relations on national security, trade and commerce, and citizens.

He will visit France and will attend the State of the EU address.

According to reports, he has suggested making Canada an associate member of the European Union.

Carney said visa regulations and a possibility of visa-free travel will be part of the talks.

Some commentators note the European Union's positive view of Carney is no guarantee of easier trade agreements.

They also say a deeper partnership could carry costs for Canada.
