A Sydney woman named Carolyn has become the first person in Australia laid to rest in a coffin formed from fungi. The Guardian and the Sydney Morning Herald published the story on September 7.
The coffin is made from mycelium, the thread-like web of fungi. It breaks down fast and puts nutrients back into the earth. People in the funeral industry say that more Australians are now considering greener burial options, outside of standard graves or cremation arrangements.
