Here’s a quick update on the latest Swift-related news I can share now, with a few reputable sources you can check for deeper details.
What are “Swifts”?
- Swifts are a family of small, aerial passerine birds known for their long migrations and spectacular in-air acrobatics. They’re a common conservation focus in the UK and Europe due to declines linked to urban development and changes in nesting sites.[8]
Recent themes in swift news
- Urban nesting and housing policy: Several conservation groups and news outlets are reporting ongoing discussions about integrating swift bricks or other nesting opportunities into new builds and renovations, aiming to restore and protect swift populations in urban areas.[7][8]
- Local swift colony updates: Community wildlife groups frequently post seasonal diaries about nest counts, fledging events, and long-term monitoring results. These can vary by location and year but provide valuable, ground-level insight into how swift populations are doing in specific neighborhoods or towns.[3][4][5]
- Public outreach and monitoring efforts: National and local organizations continue to promote citizen science, nest surveys, and rescue/rescue-rehabilitation updates to engage the public in swift conservation efforts.[10][7]
Key sources to consult for the latest
- Swift Conservation News: Regular updates from a dedicated conservation organization focusing on swifts and swift bricks; good for policy and field news.[7]
- UK local swift diaries/blogs: Community pages that track nest visits, fledging dates, and seasonal totals; useful for real-time or near-term trends in specific towns or houses.[1][4][5]
- National wildlife or birding outlets: Major outlets reporting on housing policy implications for swifts and progress on swift bricks in new developments.[8]
Illustrative example
- A typical swift diary entry might note: “X chicks fledged this week; Y nests active; the weather impacted feeding schedules; a new nest entry was confirmed at location Z.” These diaries help calibrate overall population trends and inform local conservation actions.

www.bristolswifts.co.uk7th August 2024 The Swift season has finished in Lewes for this year with no nest entries or exits being observed since 3rd August. The number of different nest entrances we recorded was 84, one more than last year. Fifty to sixty visits were recorded at some of the nests, so we are confident that at least some of the Swifts bred successfully despite the changeable weather. We hope that those nests visited later in the season by younger prospecting Swifts will be returned to next year when the...
