Hospitals in multiple states have treated close to a thousand people suffering from violent bowel movements caused by a dangerous parasite. Health authorities have now recorded nearly two thousand infections spanning dozens of regions.
Symptoms appear suddenly, with abdominal cramps and explosive diarrhea starting within hours. Some victims collapse from dehydration and end up in emergency rooms needing immediate IV fluids.
Experts strongly warn the public to wash fresh produce thoroughly before consuming. Local water supplies in some areas may also be unsafe. Anyone experiencing rectal bleeding or a persistent high temperature should get checked immediately.
The parasite, Cyclospora cayetanensis, spreads only through contaminated food. So far, no source has been pinpointed by investigators.
